Expert calls for Good Design projects
DENPASAR: David Berman, the author of Do Good Design: How Design Can Help Repair The World, is in Bali for a four-day meeting and discussion with local designers.
He is promoting what is called good and socially responsible designs.
Invited by the Indonesian Association of Graphic Designers (ADGI), Berman will speak with experts, creative workers and young designers at several venues in Bali including in Bentara Budaya Bali, Taman 65, Danes Art Veranda in Denpasar and in Ubud from June 1-4.
Berman has been named a high-level advisor to the UN on how design can be used to help fulfill the Millennium Development Goals.
In his book, Do Good Design, Berman has called for all designers to be more sensitive and creative in their work rather than just producing good design for clientele. He cited an example that the designers’ most important client was Earth.
He has strongly urged his fellow designers to “Do Good” in every step of their professional lives.
The ideas, he said, were not an attempt to avoid business or commercial aspects of designs. The ideas were to make the design business more responsible in their practices.
Professionalism and social, economic and environmentally responsibilities are the keys to Do Good Design business, he said.
Irvan N.Suryanto, secretary-general of the ADGI, said the discussions would really benefit local designers. “Designs must act as social change and we have to adopt the ideas,” said Suryanto. — JP
