Judging a book by its cover adalah program pada Ubud Writers and Readers Festival 2011 yang merupakan sesi dari para desainer. Acara akan diselenggarakan pada hari Kamis, 6 Oktober 2011 pada pukul 12:15 – 13:30 bertempat di Left Bank Lounge. Judging a book by its cover akan membahas tema: Graphic novels and illustrated texts: does a picture tell a thousand words?

Sebagai narasumber dari sesi ini adalah Ayip, Eiji Han Shimizu, Edel Rodriguez dan sebagai Chair: Alicia Sometimes

Edel Rodriguez
was born in 1971 in Havana, Cuba. He received a B.F.A. in Painting from Pratt Institute in 1994 and an M.F.A. from Hunter College in 1998. Using a variety of materials, his work ranges from conceptual to portraiture and landscape. His work has been featured in Print’s 1998 New Visual Artists Annual and on the cover of the 2004 Communication Arts Illustration Annual. It has also been regularly selected to appear in the pages of CA, American Illustration, SPD, and The Society of Illustrators Annuals. He is also the recipient of both a Gold and a Silver Medal for editorial illustration from the Society of Illustrators. He has illustrated two children’s books, “Mama does the Mambo” and “Float Like a Butterfly”, a story about Cassius Clay. A stamp he created for the United States Postal Service was published in the Summer of 2005.

Eizi Han Shimizu
Shimizu was born in Yokohama, 1970. He is an activist with concept “Make the World Better by MANGA Media” and the founder of Emotional Content LLC., issues worldwide “Biographic Novel” -a series of MANGA, which describes the ways of lives of heroes who had changed the world such as the 14th Dalai Lama, Mohandas Gandhi, etc. Shimizu got an MBA at Miami University and joined Sun Microsystems, Inc.. Then he returned to Japan and did business development at Recruit Inc. Although he was living full life in his own way apparently, he was hit by “Midlife Crisis” –asking himself essential questions “What am I going to be?” and “What’s the way I want to live own life”. Then he quit his job, went to U.S. again and started his current project.With his motto “Just Do What I Love”, now he is living his life twice or more happier than when he earned twice more money than he does now. Aspiring that his works will become a help to make the world more positive by creating informative, inspirational and empowering pieces, he produces a documentary movie about human rights and humanity at Wadi Rum Productions in U.S. He has been making documentary movie “Happiness”, traveling all over the world, for three and a half years. Ayip
Arief “Ayip” Budiman is a prominent figure in the domain of graphic design and marketing communication in Indonesia. His career blossomed as creative director of Matamera Design Studio in 1991, followed then by the development of other creative ventures including MatameraBook focusing in the publication of art, cultural and humanitarian books.In 2008, Ayip published his first book “I See Indonesia”, a visual tribute and interpretation of his perpetual love and respect to Nusantara, Indonesia. He is among the creative minds behind Bali Creative Community, a creative hub to stimulate and encourage the formation of an endless creative climate and culture in Indonesia especially Bali. Now he is a chairman of Indonesian Graphic Designers Association 2010-2012

Alicia Sometimes
Alicia Sometimes is an Australian writer, poet, broadcaster and musician. Her radio show is 3RRR’s Aural Text. She has two poetry collections, Kissing The Curve and Soundtrack. She was editor of the national literary journal Going Down Swinging for seven years and has toured nationally and internationally with her poetry. She is director and one of the writers of the Melbourne International Arts Festival science-poetry show, Elemental. Alicia is a poetry and science nut and is dedicated to taking poetry to fascinating places.
